  1. Typical Vice politically framed piece on a musical genre. Oppression, bla bla, it's just a reggaeton beat guys and most songs follow the same format. It is like a lot of trap/rap music that use the same old tired rhythms… It is tedious and lacks musicality, melody, originality, key changes to keep it interesting, and so on.

  2. I'm happy he acknowledged the contribution of Africans and Jamaicans to reggaton genre. Everything nonblack Latinos love about their culture is due to the heavy and sustained influence of African slaves. But they don't like to hear this tho…

  3. When I lived in Nicaragua in the early 2000s all I heard was Daddy Yankee (Gasolina) blaring in the streets literally everywhere. Couldn't escape it. For that reason I hate it with every fiber of my being.

  4. With peace and love (and no disrespect to this guy) why not interview some of the originators of the genre (who many are still alive and making music) from any of the countries mentioned, especially Puerto Rico who helped catapult the genre mainstream as opposed to a rando French dude?

Also, majority of the genre now is not political and overtly sexual. Bad Bunny has a few singles about the conditions in PR along with some other but most of the rest of it is explicit trash for the sake of being explicit.

Lastly, “afro Caribbean people who put it on the map” 100% but then shows a close up of Cuba instead of centering on Jamaica lol

  5. this mini documentary sucks! he barely mentioned the real origin of reggaeton 'Carolina, Puerto Rico', Panama created a rhythm similar to reggaeton from the Jamaican reggae but that's IT… do your research and if you're going to make such documentary about this genre you should use a Puertorican to narrate the story.

  6. Reggae has so many subsets – Roots, Dancehall, Lovers Rock, with so many variations within each. And so many beats – Rockers, Steppers, One Drop. Reggaeton to me is Monoton. Go back and listen to Dancehall from the late 80’s to early 90’s. Sly and Robbie, Steely and Cleevy.
