Google says a couple bodies were discovered around that time. One closest was suspected to be a hit & run boating accident which would explain the odd dismemberments, but it was during the summer when the body was discovered and they never mentioned that it was super decayed. Pretty crazy to think that there is that possibility though.

Shaver Lake, CA Boating traffic on Shaver Lake came to a stand still before lunch time Friday. Fresno County deputies were told the body of a man was floating in the water near an empty kayak.
"Apparently two fishermen located a body in the water," said Deputy Chris Curtice.
Curtice said there is some type of gash on the victim's head. "We don't know what this is because there is trauma obviously it could be a sign of foul play, it could also be a boating accident, it could be hit and run. We just don't know."
It was a 66 year old woman that was found after her family reported that she was supposed to be meeting them at a family get together and never showed up
