We had no power for 36 hours. We were expected to not have it for Christmas day but luckily the power came back on at 9am
You do not realize how lucky you wre. It was pretty astute of you to check for fire. If it had been left unattended, it takes less than 2 minutes for a fire like what you described to become nearly unstoppable. You timing was spot on, there.
