Yo! I get that same way when I'm smoking joints. The end of the joint is very harsh and I am a stoner that feels the smoother the hit, the better the high. So, something my friends and I started doing is putting the joint on the end of a one-hitter. The extra length cools it down quite a bit and it's easier to pass. This works with blunts too if they are made with the right tip size.
