I don't buy the european version of Garifuna history. Are you telling me, a ship of enslaved Africans crashed in honduras, adopted Arawak language, culture, foods etc.. and the Arawaks just disapeared leaving Africans in Honduras? the most plusible explation is that the garifuna are not enslaved africans, but africans who migrated to honduras thousands of years ago.
I had fried plantains for the first time at a buffet in Jamaica. It makes YOU a believer, especially when you realize the buffet plantains are not as good as the ones you get at a restaurant or when you order a la carte. The taste and how it feels. It's like this magical fruit/vegetable. And then you start to pay attention to what the cab driver says about what he eats, and you notice this certain 'something' in how he talks about eating. Last cab driver told me he had the SAME breakfast, plantains, fresh juice, scrambled eggs and bacon, for 15 years. People in the US think about how good we have it here. And THEN you try the Jamaican sugar. The coffee chick at the hotel tells you that the packaged stuff is not nearly as good as the raw. And you wait til she's gone and you go with the packaged, because it's ALL you can handle in terms of a sugar 'upgrade.' You know? It's ridiculous how well people eat on islands. And yet, everyone I meet who went to Jamaica never even mentions plantains or the amazing fresher sugar. You miss a golden opportunity to appreciate the world. What ELSE are you missing in your boring life?
This food looks no different from what I make in my Kitchen; Family from another Papa! Plantains are a staple…..They just taste so damn good next to beans and rice soaked in Coco milk!
I love to cook/create en la Cocina! WE are more the same than we are different!✌🏾🖤✊🏾
I love Belizean food. In Brooklyn on Sundays they have a food rally where they have bomb food. I used to go get fresh panedas. She’d make them right there. It was sooo good 💛
The Mosquito coast is located on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua and Honduras. I've always wanted to try garifuna food. I will have to travel down to L.A from the Valley to try this.
The Atlantic coast of Central America have more in common with Caribbean countries than with their country's mainland culture due to little to no road infrastructure, as is the case with Nicaragua, which is why they've been able to preserve their culture very well.
The drumming is very similar to Umbanda and Candomble styles used in the religious services in Brazil, very similar to Axé and Samba – which came from the same places, you know. Dude, the dancing, food and chanting… Damn you Covid.
Love how they show and tell the owners story and the story of the truck/cart/place. But would love some more of the actual cooking and food. Just make the video twice as long.
I got a good one in my old town it’s a Spanish restaurant underground in his basement and it’s word of mouth of course the guy who played the dude made of rocks in the fantastic 4 ate there didn’t even know

Is this still around ? And where at in LA?
I wonder if he can still speak Garifuna. It's the only native Caribbean language still spoken. Slaves learned it from the Caribs.
This dude just makes you smile and makes you want to show up at his truck day after day, the epitome of a true street food icon
