Diamonds are made by slow evaporation of the butane, resulting in seperation of terpenes from ThCa crystals. The "sauce" is that terpene layer ontop the diamonds. Some producers do add different terpenes to diamonds than the original strain, usually to produce "candy like" flavours.

The diamonds grow in the sauce then they separate the diamonds and add the terp sauce back to them at whatever ratio they think appropriate. Some people will add food grade terpenes to diamonds but that’s not what you want you want real cannabis terps
