Distilled or highly filtered water works better than tap to keep your 'water pipe' clean. The higher your water ppm is then the less capacity it has to hold more particulates. Except if you put salt into the water. It acts like a scrub for the glass

The best bong smoke is super clean RO water or distilled water, ice,chilled glass,diffuser beads and a bottom ball stuck in the fitting of the bowl, and an ash catch/perc. That would be as smooth as a vape
I used to pair juice with my weed. Grape Kool aide for Grandaddy purp, pineapple juice for Pineapple Express,etc. my roommate back in the day used to fill his bong with Hennessy. I would use distilled water or spring water,never tap water.
