When pet bills get this far out of control and families have kids to feed there is the eventual decision to put the pet down or give it up to a shelter that is probably already overwhelmed. It's nuts. I wonder if over time fewer people will be pet owners just due to the financial commitment.
Alfred Lee Vardeman in Colorado City, TX is the most awesome vet. He is a fantastic veterinarian. His prices are never excessive. It’s all about the animals for him. He’s the best.
Is it time for pet care insurance reform? Is there pet insurance exceptions for those willing to adopt and care for a rescue or puppy mill rescue with pre existing health issues? Is there tax breaks for high risk animal care costs for pet parents? Is their tax benefits for veterinarians offering gear to income fees or payment plans?
It shouldn't be a luxury to own a pet because even routine vet care costs have gotten so high. Heaven forbid your dog develops a heart murmur as they want to charge you for diagnosing it. Instead of giving you any treatment options you get a referral to a vet cardiologist that are typically found in big cities and will be charged $500 just to be seen. So you're screwed if you live in a rural area. I do believe that the love we have for our pets is being exploited.
Potential vet costs are the primary reason I no longer have any pets. But a lot of the blame should be placed on the breeders. With regard to dogs, they're not being bred for longevity, and conditions such as hip dysplasia are not being bred out. This is absurd, especially when considering that breeders charge thousands of dollars for pups.
It is sad I've had my dachsunds 15 years and now that I've been forced into retirement due to my own health it's extremely hard for me to afford vet care. Our vet retired and these young guys that came in are so expensive and have no compassion. No money no service. No payment plans. I do what I can I read a lot. I watch vets like you. If it gets serious I guess I will have to euthanize the last one of our little family. It's sad actually. Times have changed it seems even for our pets medical care is becoming out of reach.
I'm a sucker for watching the programs for great people to find these creatures in all terrible conditions bring them into the vet. And immediately this awesome doctor jumps right on the. creature to save it. When I brought my dog in having a heart attack and the vet told me that and stated I had to have a $3000 deposit before she could. Treat it 3:00 in the morning. I told her if you don't try to save my dog. I will drive my truck through your Is clinic. I returned after the banks were open with the deposit. My dog lived for another year after 13000 these fats don't give a d*** about anything put the money for the most part if you can't afford to do something your dog will be put down. And you really can't afford to have that done anymore . It seems to me for the most part it's nothing but a money making business. Just like for the humans
I took my sick cat to the vet. Diagnosed with a heart condition and they wanted to sedate to do an expensive MRI. I said okay. They later called to say my dear cat did not wake up after sedation and died. They only charged me for the cost of a routine visit. Not all clinics are bad.
I use a very expensive, very high quality specialty vet practice. One I recently paid 10k for a week of intensive care. It is probably the best specialty hospital around. To me that is worth it. However, I also think that lessor hospitals-including one that "pretends" it is part of a big vet school (they just license the name-it is shameful that they plaster their walls with pictures of the school) and other corporate owned specialty hospitals are NOT worth it. The reason they are high is they are owned by corporations which are quickly buying up vet hospitals. I do spend a lot on my animals. If you do spend a lot and want to treat if there is cancer, etc, the one thing I would recommend is buying pet insurance with NO LIMIT. Years ago, coverage was poor-it has improved. Buy it when your pet is young before they get sick. Several had a $5k limit-I found one without a limit that would cover catastrophic care. If you are like me, you can't make a euthanasia decision based on cost . Most people don't have that luxury but having the no limit catastrophic coverage equalizes that. I won't say the name of the insurer. I pay about $50 a month-it covers all illnesses except prior within 18 months. That is why you should consider it when your pet is young and healthy.
I was just at the vet yesterday to get my three dogs their annual check up and shots. I walked out with an $860 bill to find that somebody else in the parking lot had hit my car. Just a wonderful day.
I just paid $2K for dental work on my cat who has tooth resorption issues. Thank goodness "Grandma" helped us out. I feel so bad for people with even less $ than me.
I entered into an arrangement with my vet. I pay them small deposits, which to me is very affordable, every month. After several months of this (when my dogs don't go to the vet), I've built up a good amount of credit. So, I basically pay forward and the vet knows that when something happens, they're already paid or there's a large deposit that they've already received. This makes them more open to working with you as a pet parent when you can't pay the entire, enormous bill in one go.
It's the same fee scheme that Doctors and Hospitals use on people here in the USA. Now it is being used in Veterinarian Hospitals. My friend and I now take our pets to Mexico and see the Veterinarian there. Better service at a fraction of the cost.
I am giving real thought to getting another animal. I had insurance for my last one and it was so expensive. The vet was charging what they would for a human. Then when it became clear that my cat was suffering the vet didn't want to put him down – even though he was 17. IMHO, for the money. I had to call a company to come to my home and put him down. I didn't like feeling trapped like that. Now I have looked into adopting and some places require a VET REFERENCE. Insanity. There is something deeply wrong with the whole thing.
You nailed the issue! Ive felt that vets are now treating pets the way humans are treated and charging accordingly. Vets around here used to give you a break if you brought in a feral cat to be spayed and treated but not anymore.. 😟
Thank you for your informative presentation. Unfortunately what you've shared is going on within every profession, not just veterinary. Small, independent businesses are struggling to survive against massive corporate operations but ethics must take precedence. It's hard for customers to get an honest fee list from just about any business and things are only going to get worse! The collapse of our economy will begin in Spring 2024.
I have a vet a block away that asked me for $800 to see my diabetic cat cause she didn’t like it that I didn’t take my cat to emergency ER, another vet saved my cat for $200
I have a cat that had an abscessed tooth in the vet wanted around $3,100 to have teeth extracted, she didn't even look at his teeth. I called our neighbor who's a vet and in his 80s and he said I could bring him to his clinic even though he's not accepting new patients. He charged us $60 for a rabies vaccine and some oral antibiotics and the cat got better after some time. I was so upset because I kept thinking about the kids in our city who probably would love to have a cat or dog but then can't afford those fees. I hate to be like a social justice person or think that you have to be well off in order to afford the upkeep and health of an animal. I think every child deserves a cat or a dog when they're growing up.
Last month my dog was shaking her head and crying. I made a vet appointment when green stuff came out of her eye. She had a yeast infection in one ear and had irritated her eye scratching her ear. $450 meds included. That seems high for a yeast infection
I live in a small beach city in SoCal. There's one doctors office but three vet clinics. People seem more willing to spend on their pet, so increased demand has resulted in higher pet care costs because people will pay.
I specifically chose a vet that is a privately owned practice that’s not umbrellaed or has a parent company. The husband and wife duo do what they can to keep prices affordable. They are becoming really popular, though. I’m kind of worried that they will sell out eventually because they are aging 😢
Yup. I’ve experienced this lately. I loved my vet but he retired at 78 years old. His replacement suggested an ultrasound for my cat. $500. They said she had pancreatitis. Total misdiagnosis. She had a tumor above her bladder- found 6 months later with a $100 X-ray. The vet told me the ultrasound would be better. I think it was because the ultrasound person was coming that day and it cost more. I’m not happy. All the good vets are gone. My guess is there’s more marketing than compassion being taught at vet schools now. Capitalism out of control.
People need to start putting their pets down quicker and stop this rot. I know people will think this is wrong but it isn't it's reality. We are not intouch anymore.
My grandfather was an MD from the mid 1930's to the 1990's and he said the healthcare industry changed so much in that time. He said people used to go into medicine to help people, by his retirement his younger colleagues were solely in it for money. He believed the widespread adoption of insurance was what ruined the industry, it drove prices up, introduced new legislation and enabled a new competitiveness amongst pharmaceutical companies. I see the same thing happening in veterinary medicine now. A few months ago my 15 y/o diabetic cat had an episode of hypoglycemia, his sugar was very low, too low to correct at home so I took him to an emergency vet (as it was after hours for my local vet). 24hrs later I was allowed to bring him home and my bill was $1,700. They charged $60 for every time they tested his sugar and they were using a typical home diabetic test kit, they tested him 12 times. It was $650 just to be seen and the rest is what they charged for the dextrose injection. Even with the emergency office call, my normal vet wouldn't have charged over $300 for that.
My cat had an operation to get a tumor removed in 2019. It cost me 700 dollars in total. The tumor had grown back in the same place this year. I got to the vet to get him checked, it would have cost me almost $400 just to get him seen. Another $400 for blood work and they also wanted to update his vaccines or they would refuse to see him at all. Those vaccines , which were $20 a piece last time I did them increased in price by a factor of 10. And there was more then one of them. It would have cost of 2 000 in "mandatory" work not related to his condition before the vet would even agree to start anything related to his cancer. The price for the surgery was now close to 8 000. When I went into the vet clinics in 2019, they were packed. People and pet in every chair, long waits. Last two times I went in it was empty. I was taken right away and was in and out of the building in under 5 mins. With a $400 dollar hole in my pocket. The vet missed it the first time, and the second gave me the run down of the ridicules costs. The vets have now priced themselves out of the market. Most people I know refuse to use them. When vet care is needed, they either do it themselves or go to an black market for care. Even humanely putting a cat or dog down now costs several thousand dollars.
We love our pets but spend very little on vet bills. We watch your channel and others. Everything pretty much natural. I’m retired and simply cannot afford much. The last Vet we went to caused severe allergies in our miniature poodle with the vaccines he gave her. Never again will we go back.
same thing is happening here in Australia. recently had a cat with a paw problem to to emergency vet was told it could cost $3000 to manage as an open would and more if amputation was involved and could be ongoing medical and operation's which could have mounted to close to $10000 all up. Said i can't afford that was then asked how much can i afford. I said now where near that so i asked options. they said not many until i mentioned euthanasia. I had already cleaned and bandaged injury and said that the cat would not allow them to remove bandage i sat there for 3 hours while they ad mistered a tranquilizer and said the cat would not allow them to remove bandage. : Afraid of getting bitten" do they not have gloves for such situations i had no issue getting the bandage on. Then was told to go home and they would call me later by this time it was nearly 12.30pm got a a call abt 4.00pm saying the the wound was very server and amputation would be required so cost for that would be $3000 + on going and more possible surgeries i opted for euthanasia which still cost me $800 and a dead cat. in hind sight i think i should have cared for the cat my self using my own people medical knowledge. It has become controlled by big Pharma just like the general medical system. Pretty poor system evolving where money is the predominate reason for entering a profession.
The simple answer is greed. Vets have learned that people will pay dearly to heal their beloved pets, and vets take advantage of that.
When pet bills get this far out of control and families have kids to feed there is the eventual decision to put the pet down or give it up to a shelter that is probably already overwhelmed. It's nuts. I wonder if over time fewer people will be pet owners just due to the financial commitment.
Years ago the great vets did not need all this fancy testing .the question is Why.

It's the government. They don't want you to have pets. More of your paycheck to steal and redistribute. And expect forced veganism soon.

It's a Fu##ing CAT.

Its crazy high rates in NYC even routine care there is also nasty rude vets at Bond Vet witch is a chain then Small Door who are a "club"!
When my 2 remaining pets have gone I won’t be getting any more, it’s just got ridiculous. Having a pet will soon only be for the very rich
Things are worse in Canada. People who live near the border go over to the US for vet care.
How about feeding them the right food ? It works for humans…
You nailed the issue! Ive felt that vets are now treating pets the way humans are treated and charging accordingly. Vets around here used to give you a break if you brought in a feral cat to be spayed and treated but not anymore.. 😟
DO NO HARM!
Doctors – Financial harm is not REAL harm

Vet pricing pet owners out. Locally dog dental clean run $400-700. Yeah.

thank you for all of your help. You are so kind to share this info.I use your advice all of the time and it works,
It seems parts of the veterinary industry have picked up greedy habits of the human medical industry :'(

I have an “old school” vet in Dr. Pol – so thankful for him and his practice.

I don’t know why this video dropped in my feed, but I think you may have just saved my cats life. You’re awesome, thank you.
