Did you know that Delta-8 THC is the 4th most-researched cannabinoid, not just in the United States, but worldwide? As its popularity grows, so do the amount of questions. People are curious to see how this unique cannabis strain is produced and what makes it so different than traditional marijuana (also known as Delta-9 THC). Since the United States has suppressed quite a bit of this information over the past few years, we’re determined to do our part to ensure you completely understand what Delta-8 THC is and how it’s made. Let’s begin!

A Short History of Delta-8 THC

There are actually several names for Delta-8 THC. The scientific name is Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, so you can see why it’s shortened to Delta-8, D8, Delta-8 THC, or simply Δ8 THC. Despite its recent popularity burst a few months ago, Delta-8 THC has actually been around since 1974. The world has been researching this particular hemp strain for decades, to the point where it is the fourth most researched cannabinoid in the industry. Due to its confusing legality, the research on Delta-8 has been largely suppressed to those in the United States.

But thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, Delta-8 THC is actually legal since it contains less than 0.3% THC. Delta-8 THC does get you high, but offers a more controlled, clear-headed high, not to be confused with the intense psychoactive effect that Delta-9 THC possesses.Although cannabis does contain Delta-8 THC, it is in extremely small quantities. Less than 1% of Delta-8 THC exists in dried cannabis flowers, which is why Delta-8 THC must be extracted. The extraction process consists of isolating the compound or using other cannabinoids to synthesize the Delta-8 compound.

How Delta-8 THC Is Made

There are several crucial factors involved when crafting exquisite Delta-8 THC. The soil in which the hemp is grown should be free of pesticides, dark and rich. The cannabis flowers are then carefully harvested, then dried, cured, and trimmed. Many of the Delta-8 THC buds are chock-full of other legal cannabinoids, such as CBD, CBN, and of course, CBD!

The hemp flower buds are now ready for the extraction process. First the Delta-8 compound is isolated. The isolate is a tasteless viscous liquid that needs to be synthesized and refined before it can be properly distilled. A thin film distillation process is often used, with variations of temperature and pressure to create a high quality Delta-8 distillate. That distillate is often 80% or higher in Delta-8 THC content. Some companies choose to refine this 80% Delta-8 distillate to craft a higher concentration of over 99% pure Delta-8 THC.

Lastly, some companies convert CBD and CBD compounds into bulk Delta-8 THC, using an isomerization process. However, this is done with highly specialized equipment that requires constant supervision to be done properly. The end result is a Delta-8 THC extract that is free of additives and solvents, contains less than 0.3% of Delta-9 THC (making it legal for sale in nearly all 50 states), and offers an incredibly high quality Delta-8 THC that can be integrated in a wide variety of products.

Where Can I Buy Delta-8 THC Products?

There are several websites that are growing in popularity. Some companies who solely produced CBD products are now expanding to include Delta-8 products in their inventory. Other companies have sprung up that specialize in high-quality Delta-8 THC products and nothing else. Since Delta-8 THC products are not yet regulated by the FDA, it is extremely important that you purchase your Delta-8 products from a reputable source. Check to see if the company offers third-party independent lab testing and verified customer reviews for their products.
