  1. I thought my dog was getting better but this morning he's not wanting to eat anything that he was eating last night he's breathing harder not getting the blood flow like it should be. I thought the medicines were working my veterinarian told me to give him an update today so I will do that. He did not tell me that my dog had DCM but I can only imagine that's what he has

  2. Dr Jones,
I have a 94 lb pit, roughly around the age of 12 -13 in my veterinarian records. My dog just got x-rays today and the size of his heart. I would say it was the size of your fist with your other hand covering your fist. He's having trouble breathing, mostly during excitement times, jumping on the bed exhausts him. My doctor said my dog's heart is not pumping and getting oxygen like it should be. These are the medicines he's taking at the moment.Mirtazapine 15mg once a day,Vetmedin Generic10mg(Pimobendan)one every 12hrs,Furosemide(Lasix)50mg 2 every 12hours,Benazepril20mg 1 every 12hours.
He pulled the blood test that he needed and I got that for free. The last couple of years I've been feeding him Victor performance in the green bag. Do you know if this is a grain-free food? Does this sound like DCM?

  3. It sounds simple. A modern animal will never exert itself like a wild animal and thus will never have as strong a heart. Kibble of any kind will not restore Your heart nor a wild animals

  4. I’m so confused I have a mini pin cross so is grain free bad or good for these breeds can someone answer this for me thanks I’m having such a hard time finding a healthy reasonable food to feed him I’m so lost 😞 they stoped selling the royal canine food I had him on 💯 and if I give him this tourmaline will that stop it from preventing please help I would love Some suggestions for a small table since he has dental issues as well but is a mini/pin Chihuahua cross and I know need to switch his food thanks

  5. Thank you so much. I've been curious about the ingredients possibly linked to DCM. I don't like feeding legumes to my dogs.
My previous dog, Raela, tested positive for green pea allergy as well as peanuts, alfalfa, beef dairy and soy. I never gave her soy. It definitely helped to learn those allergies. But I had to start making her food because that's the same year every company started adding green peas to the food, even the limited ingredient foods.
Now, I'm happy to cook for my dogs, adding supplements and commercial raw to it.

  6. What do you think of ACANA Wholesome Grains Limited Ingredient Diet Duck & Pumpkin Recipe dog food? It does not have peas, Legumes, potatoes. is this safe for my Golden Retriever? It also has a vitamin pack with added taurine.

  7. Dr. Interested in your thoughts in “stella and chewys” brand if you give it your stamp of approval or not. they have freeze-dried coated kibble and they do have whole grain line out now called “wild red” which im thinking of trying i make sure to look at the guaranteed analysis As im trying stay within the parameters for a puppy.
i have a good guideline i go by thats used by vets to ensure i stay in the appropriate range in terms of calcium, phosphorus, fat, protein i know by exceeding those parameters over time can lead to serious problems down the road. Your thoughts are appreciated.

  8. !#$@#%% This is so frustrating! I have done extensive research on best kibbles. I have a Doberman and is prone to DCM…I am happy with the kibble I chose because of its legitimate healthy ingredients…and then they turn around and say its bad. I literally don't know what to do anymore.

  9. Orijen just replied to my inquiry on their taurine level and they shared that their taurine levels is at .22% higher that Royal Canine for GR. Here is their reply

Our ORIJEN foods are not taurine deficient. All our recipes are scientifically verified and formulated with the optimal health of your pets as a priority. The nutrition, digestibility and palatability of our foods are routinely and rigorously tested to ensure your animal is getting a complete and balanced food. Our ORIJEN foods provide great sources of cysteine, methionine and taurine from the abundant meat ingredients used in our recipes and exceed all reported requirements by FEDIAF and the NRC.

Our ORIJEN Original recipe features a taurine content of 0.22%.

  10. For the ones curious about a way to resolve this problem…supplement with taurine.
Taurine deficiency is how these dogs got that heart condition in the vast majority of cases. And i would add that thanks to supplements most of the dogs were able to fully recover while being on their grain free diet (some improved by just changing the brand of grain free kibbles).

please remember that your dogs are always at risk of developping health problems related to their diet regardless of it containing grains or not!
always try to supplement it with a variety of dog friendly foods or even just supplements, a lot of famous and recommended brands are known to increase the risks of some health problems (kidney failure, diabetes, tooth decay, even some types of cancers ect) that were not linked to them specifically by studies. (they did not gave the brand's name but instead gave some hints to what specifically can increase the risks of such problems)

  11. My daughter is a veterinary technician and, about one month ago, she came home saying that ‘grain free dog food’ was found guilty of producing heart disease in dogs. She mentioned two particular brands. Fortunately, we feed our dogs a high-quality, balanced diet including grains.

  12. My dog was diagnosed 5 days ago with dilated cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. He's only 6, extremely athletic, and always in peak physical condition. It came out of nowhere. My vet said it's most likely the grain free food he'd been on. Here's hoping he recovers.

  13. Thank you for this update. I had erroneously believed the issue was mainly caused by legumes in grain free foods only, and specifically started researching the topic again to determine if a grain inclusive food with pea protein (Blue Buffalo) might have induced DCM in two of my oldest dogs. Unfortunately, I now have my answer 🙁

  14. For the very first time, I bought a “pedigree” dog, who turns 3 in 10 days time. Before buying her, I did as much research as possible into the kinds of genetic problems of that breed and specific notes on other issues in regard to their overall care. This included what kind of diet works best, especially with the fact that I would be doing most of the preparation and cooking for her. I do a reasonable batch that lasts about 10 days, having a freshly cooked batch kept in the fridge, and freezing the rest. She has cans of dog food on stand-by for emergencies, and it’s a bit of a treat for her. We do give her packaged treats, but they have become limited, being replaced with a Kong that is full of delicious, natural, tasty, healthy bits and pieces. She gets bone-meal-based kibble, but that is by no means the mainstay of her diet. I also include things like flax (either meal or whole seeds – and the whole seeds seem to help keep her anal glands expressed), hemp meal or chia meal or coconut flour to thicken her stews, and her food is made up of roughly 60% meat (a combination of minced beef/lamb/turkey/chicken… sometimes with some eggs thrown in, too) and 40% vegetables (carrots or sweet potato plus some cruciferous veges and maybe a few green beans… no potatoes, rice or pasta). I also add curry spices and traditional European culinary herbs (no garlic or onion). All curcuminoids possess anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as a pre-emptive strike against joint degeneration (N.B. Black pepper is the catalyst that releases the active agents in the curcuminoids). Sage and thyme are very strong (and tasty) antibiotics (the good doctor may appreciate the lymphatic reference in the botanical name for thyme, i.e. Thymus vulgaris. Parsley is good for purifying blood, but not too much, as it can then become toxic… but a little bit helps the gut and helps keep your baby’s breath a little fresher, too). Because her breed is prone to thyroid problems, I add a tiny touch of iodised salt to her food, too. Do check for contraindications for your breed of dog, and it’s age and state of health, but please do think about making your dog’s food more often (and realise that the vegetables in the food need to be basically cooked down to mush, which also helps thicken the gravy while retaining all the nutritional value, plus a little extra fibre). When you work it all out, making your dog’s food comes out on a par in monetary terms; it may cost a little for the fuel to cook the food but you pay more than that extra bit when you are buying “top quality” processed dog foods. And ask yourself this question, “Does my fur-baby deserve to eat mass produced substances that pretend to be real food, or do they deserve to eat something that I know has no colourings, preservatives, additives or any other noxious ingredients because I know exactly what is in their food, and I know it was lovingly prepared for them, to cater to their specific needs?” Sending love and light to all ❤️ xxxoooxxx ❤️

  15. I’ve started giving my dog earthborn unrefined dog food but I’d love recipes so I can make the switch to making my own food. I don’t feel comfortable feeding her raw food and she doesn’t like raw meat anyway. She’s 6yrs old so she knows what she likes and doesn’t! I’d also like to know more about any kind of vitamins I should be giving her per her weight. The natural the better!! I try not to give her any harsh medication or all this new medicine that is pushed on us if she doesn’t need it.

  16. It makes me furious that the FDA does little to nothing on letting dog food companies sell food known to hurt or kill dogs to trusting customers. The difference of money dog food companies put into marketing $$$$$$ compared to making nutritionally good dog food $$ is despicable.

  17. Thanks Dr Jones! Is it safe to give my dog raw vegetables? She love string beans and broccoli. Thank you for taking the time to do this service for us. Videos are great.

  18. i have absolutely no faith in the FDA. knowing what i know now about human diet, medications and vaccines, i can no longer trust them. unfortunately our regulatory agencies have fallen prey to big ag and big pharma industries. time to put 10 years between our agencies like CDC, FDA, FCC, FAA and industry to close the revolving door and end the massive conflicts of interest. plants do not want us to eat them and have evolved to protect themselves and their seeds using plant poisons.

  19. My Shih Tzu was diagnosed with a heart murmur and is now in congestive heart failure. She's on 3 medicines. She's 13 years old. I started making her food. I don't feel comfortable feeding raw. I feed chicken, carrots, green beans, sweet potato, peas and a little quinoa and a little rice. I wish I fed her homemade food from the start. What's the best homemade food to fed a Maine coon?

  20. Drove myself crazy when I heard of this problem arising at first. Since the dry food brand (Acana) was on the list. Keep waiting for updates, and know this study takes time but it drives you crazy as a pet parent. I home-cooked half of my dogs food for years ,(half dry, half home cooked) and backed off when I heard home cooked diets are mostly deficient. Fed a few different varieties of wet with the dry after that. Different flavors and such. With several different brands. Then DCM non breed related came along. I started focusing on buying wet food brands with grains. While dry food stuck with Acana. Its hard because I try not feed chicken being its so most inflammatory meat, because I have 3 dogs with health issues and 2 dogs need less inflammatory meats. When you have dogs that you are trying to not feed chicken to, with grains, and a good company that tests food, good luck. And also trying not to do home cooked as often without a tried and true good recipe which is so hard to find with variety, good luck again. I've now essentially resigned myself to just doing a combo of all. Home cooked with brown rice usually, the dry acana, and various wet foods in-between. Not sure why feeding your dog has to be this effin hard but ok. Just wishing for a list of of homemade diets that come complete with vits as long as you rotate and no vet will give me this. Just gonna wing it I guess with the multivite I've been giving for years
