wow seriously vice? splitting it up into 7 videos and all of them have 1 or 2 ads *each*. besides, the first few parts weren’t even about the labor camps. you shouldn’t even have titled this “North Korean Labor Camps” based on the piddling few informationally scarce interviews because this was basically only about one camp. this wasn’t worth all the screen time dedicated to pointing out how everything North Korean is “propaganda” even though everything (yes, every piece of media in the world) is propaganda. understandably yall were just small crew, but at least you could have shown more of the loggers’ living situation instead of that single sweeping shot in like part 5 or whatever. even thought we all know north korea is poor so that’s to be expected and it’s bad we get it. if you showed that the managers or whomever was in charge lived in substantially better living quarters, then that would be bad of course. if worker and manager lived in the same quality places, then it can just be chalked up to the fact that DPRK is poor (common knowledge, don’t be surprised that a north Korean would know that) plus these videos don’t even show that these are labor camps as opposed to just government jobs. if these people weren’t compensated well, then i guess this would be a labor camp. but apart from one vague response from one worker (someone please get back to me on what exactly it means) we don’t get a good picture of if these people are exploited or not. i get that this series wasn’t meant to be serious or formal, but with millions of views and being one of the few on youtube showing real north koreans, there should have been a duty to be more objective, especially if you planned on doing more serious journalism in the future (which you are, vice)
So Cool
This was quite a wild ride, and I loved every minute of it. It almost felt like a weird fiction movie.
